When it comes to getting auto insurance, there are many different things to consider. Obviously, one of the most important considerations for auto insurance is the cost, but there are also a number of other things that you need to think about. For instance, what is broad form insurance, and is this type of coverage something that you really need?

Not everyone needs the same insurance coverage, and policies can vary from person to person, depending on their particular insurance needs.

Understanding California Broad Form InsuranceMost people think that a typical auto insurance policy is going to cover them in any eventuality, but they could actually end up being wrong, and if they are in an accident, may end up with many more expenses than they can afford. If you live in California, you may want to consider having this additional insurance in case there is damage to your vehicle caused by natural disasters.

While many people think that all insurance policies are the same, they would be surprised to find out that there is a lot more out there. For example, a lot of people have never heard of broad form insurance and have no idea that they may need to have it. What is broad form insurance? Basically, it is insurance coverage that goes above and beyond the coverage of a person’s regular policy. This is a supplement to an insurance policy, but of course, there is going to be an additional charge to have this extra coverage, which is yet one more thing to consider.

Insurance Requirements in California

Drivers in California are required to carry a certain amount of liability insurance to cover many of the expenses that arise from auto accidents. Liability insurance will pay for the damages of others following an accident where you are at fault. You must meet certain financial responsibility criteria in California, which does not include comprehensive or collision coverage. You must carry the following in liability coverage:

  • $15,000 for injury or death to one person in an accident
  • $30,000 for injury or death to more than one person in an accident
  • $5,000 for property damage from an accident

There are many cases where people just cannot afford the insurance they need. In the State of California, drivers who cannot afford the minimum amount of liability insurance may be eligible for the California Low Cost Automobile Insurance Program.

Why Is Broad Form Insurance Important?

You will find a number of excellent reasons to have broad form car insurance, and having the right amount of coverage can give you the peace of mind that you need when you are in your vehicle. For example, if you are in an accident where you are the driver at fault, you are going to have a number of expenses to take care of, both your own and those of the other driver(s) involved, and without insurance, you may not be able to afford these expenses, which can include not only vehicle repair but also medical costs and a whole lot more.

Here are some more great reasons to have broad form insurance:

  • You have coverage in the event of natural disasters that are not covered in typical insurance policies.
  • Coverage for anything not covered by comprehensive insurance is included.
  • You only have to pay the deductible if you are found to be more than 50% at fault in an auto accident.
  • You have the peace of mind of knowing that you are fully covered no matter what happens.

Getting Your Broad Form Insurance

There are a number of different insurance agencies that offer broad form auto insurance to customers. This is something that can be added to your existing policy or made a part of a brand new policy. It is best to shop around and get quotes from a variety of insurance agencies to make sure that you are getting the coverage you will need, and at the best rates. You need to be sure that you are going to be fully covered in certain events, so it is a good idea to make a list of questions ahead of time so you can be sure that you don’t miss anything when you are getting your quotes.

Make sure that you ask about any hidden policy features, including the type of vehicle being insured, your driving record, etc. These are things you will need to know in the future if you ever need to make an insurance claim. If you can’t get this information from insurance agents, then it is best to move on to the next company, until you are completely satisfied with the answers you get and the rates that are quoted to you.
